Natural wine Merlot – a great red wine

Merlot is a traditional grape variety that is popular worldwide and has been cultivated for decades by the Movia winery's winemaking family, the Kristancic. What makes it special is that it is macerated until the last gram of sugar has been fermented. The natural Merlot wine then matures for a long time in new oak barrels. This rounds off the sharper edges of the wine caused by the long maceration and the fresh wood of the barrels. The wine becomes smooth and gentle, but retains the pure power of the Merlot.

The natural wine is left on the yeast without racking. This results in a Merlot that no longer resembles its classic fresh fruit aroma, but instead takes on a jam-like nuance, an aroma reminiscent of dried fruit.

Ales Kristancic describes it wonderfully: ‘Some Merlots tend to be a bit heavier, as is the case with Movia Merlot. It takes our full attention to fully feel and understand the wine. The colour is opaque with garnet hues, a testament to the wine's long stay with us. But the real pleasure begins when we hold the glass closer to our nose. The combination of juicy ripe red fruits and ripeness is simply delightful. This dry, ripe, juicy Merlot has a velvety texture, plenty of structure, great backbone and serious tannins. It is ready to drink now, but will continue to delight for at least another decade.
